Habit
“I’m your constant companion, your greatest helper or heaviest burden. I push you onward or drag you down. I’m at your command. Half the things you do can be assigned to me and I’ll do them quickly and correctly. I’m easily managed – but you must be firm with me. Show me exactly what you want done and after a few lessons I’ll do it automatically. Those who are great, I made great. Those who...

–  Fox News’ Lou Dobbs, on the movie version of Dr. Suess’ The Lorax I am 99.9999% sure that when Theodor Suess Gisel wrote The Lorax in 1971 he thought, “This will be really wonderful propaganda in the event that we eventually have a black president and he and his liberal friends are inspired...

Knicks' Jeremy Lin holds mirror up to America... →
whackcatattack: I never thought I’d read a piece so straightforward on race in the sports section, and it’s refreshing to see it from a guy like Plaschke who is such an omnipresent figure of the LA Times. Without being overly accusatory, he sheds light on the uglier shadows of the “Linsanity” effect. I do agree that Jeremy Lin’s being Asian American added a special layer to what is already a...

Mayonnaise and 2 cups of coffee
When things in your life seem, almost too much to handle, When 24 Hours in a day is not enough, Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class  and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar And proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students, if the jar...

Article: Asians and OWS
I haven’t fully developed my opinion about OWS, but I know one thing - they’ve successfully catapulted the issue of the income disparity in America onto the mainstream political dialogue, in MERE WEEKS. This may even urge more people to vote this upcoming 2012 elections. But on the less brighter note, many communities of color don’t see where we fit in the movement. Here’s...

SMF to LAX
SMF airport received a major face lift. It looks like a legit international airport, grand high ceilings in the entrance and well lit and modern architecture. Most importantly plugs available near every seat! No need to lie on the ground at the lone plug in terminal. The flight attendant at the southwest kiosk is pretty hot too! I had a great time during my visit. I spent Christmas with my...

Adjusting to time
It’s 5:18 PST which is 8:18 EST and I’ve only had 5 hours of sleep. Waking up way early means sleeping way early at night unless I really force myself to stay awake, such might be the case. I can’t read since Melody took my Nook so she can test out my new toy - she’s trying to catch up on the Hunger Games series, apparently I have “more” time than a high school...

Arrival
I’ve landed in Sacramento after a quick five hour flight from dc. I don’t fear flying but I get anxious during touch down - I imagine the front wheel not aligning properly forcing the plane to nose dive and explode. I don’t know what the chances are but regardless, it can happen.

Thursday night
Finished laundry, fresh bedsheets, rainy night indoors watching James Bond Casino royale, and the House Republicans finally agreed to pass the payroll tax extension (albeit it includes the controversial and potentially environmentally harmful keystone pipeline).

Holiday break
So the packing begins! I finally got a new charger for my macbook, turns out the computer is still registered under my sister’s bf who had it for 2 weeks until my sister took it back after their break up. Now I must re-register if I expect to renew my apple care warrenty.  I leave for Sacramento tomorrow. I’m doing a direct flight to Sacramento through United! Yes that means No...

District Update
No excuse, I suck at maintaining a blog - which is a shame because every day is a memory I don’t want to forget. Now that I have a smart phone, I can blog anywhere and capture any moment with the built-in camera. These past 8 months living in D.C. has been a fun and worthwhile struggle. Sleeping on a couch, working for free, living on a small budget, and withstanding job rejections have all...

RSS feeds, Podcasts, ItunesU = Brain overload
If the internet is an ocean of data, then I literally almost drowned myself this weekend. I just learned how to use Google Reader and Podcasts/ItunesU - all are very simple and easy to use, but dangerous if discovered at the same time.  Google Reader allows gmail/google members to aggregate RSS feeds onto one page (ie. NY Times, Blogs, NPR, ESPN, and Special interest websites like Photography or...

In with the New
Things are looking especially bright for me this coming year. I’ve got an internship with the Alliance for Excellent Education as a Paid Policy Intern, which allows me to stay in DC. I’m still keeping my internship at the Capitol for 2 days of the week - I really enjoy working on the hill.   This is such a complete 180 from where I was a year ago. I completed my last quarter at UCLA...

Yelp Me find a Job
Wanna hear a funny story? So I interviewed with a temp staffing agency last week and did really well so they took me in as a candidate for temporary job placements. They’re a great company so I decided to give them a great Yelp review.  Yesterday, they called to offer me a position as a permanent recruiter for their staffing agency because they saw my Yelp review. I declined it because it...

12 No-frills Advice to handling your "shit"
I like simplicity, I like lists, and I like personal development. Dennis Santiago sent me a link that combined these three things with an up-front, no-frills, buckle-up or shut-up attitude. AND it’s written by AUSTRALIANS! http://www.craigharper.com.au/productivity/twelve-steps-to-get-shit-done/ Step 1. Don’t talk shit. Shit-talkers are notorious under do-ers, under-achievers and...

DC: Month 1
I don’t have it bad at all. Sure i may be sleeping on a couch, unemployed, graduated in a horrible time, and still interning for NO pay. But the couch I sleep on is accompanied by a house of talented and empowered minds who I do not doubt will progress this country forward. Unemployment combined with my ideals and curiosity allow me to be flexible and creative. Graduating in this recession...
